Architectural Style: Second Empire with Italianate Influence

This home combines elements from both Second Empire and Italianate architectural styles.

Second Empire Features

  • Mansard roof: The house features a mansard roof, which is a hallmark of Second Empire architecture. A mansard roof is a four-sided gambrel roof with a double slope on each side. The lower slope is steeper than the upper slope.
  • Dormer windows: The house has dormer windows projecting from the mansard roof. Dormer windows are a common feature in Second Empire homes and provide ventilation and light to the attic space.
  • Bracketed cornice: The house has a bracketed cornice, which is the horizontal molding at the edge of the roof. Corbel brackets are a common feature in Second Empire architecture.

Italianate Influence

  • Rectangular shape: The house has a simple, rectangular shape, which is more common in Italianate architecture than Second Empire.
  • Symmetrical facade: The house has a balanced facade, with the windows positioned almost mirroring each other on either side. Symmetry is more common in Italianate architecture than Second Empire, which can sometimes be asymmetrical.
  • Round arch window (above the doorway): The window above the doorway has a round arch, a common feature in Italianate architecture.

Overall, the mansard roof, dormer windows, and bracketed cornice are all strong indicators that the house incorporates Second Empire features. The rectangular shape, symmetrical facade, and round arch window suggest some Italianate influence as well. Thus, the house can be classified as a Second Empire with Italianate Influence style home.
